A Yoruba nation agitator known as Sunday Adeyemo, also called Sunday Igboho, claimed on Tuesday that the recent outburst by an Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, regarding President Bola Tinubu’s appointment of certain Christians to key positions was intended to re-establish his negotiation contract with bandits under the current administration.
A few days earlier, during one of his sermons, Gumi reportedly criticized Tinubu for selecting Southern Christians for important posts and vowed to make sure that Tinubu would not win reelection to a second term in power.
The president, according to the cleric, is accused of utilizing the North to gain the presidency and then pursuing an agenda that aims to deal with and severely diminish the political dominance of the region.
But in a statement he personally signed in Ibadan, Oyo State, Adeyemo cautioned Gumi to stop “fanning the ember of disunity” in Nigeria with his provocative remarks, which he claimed may drive people to become disenchanted.
“We know Gumi’s lineage and his antics,” Igboho remarked. Individuals such as Tinubu need to have been informing the security services of their roles regarding the smoldering insurrection in the northern regions of the nation prior to his arrival. Our support for an equal society will not go away, but we cannot stand by and let Gumi stir up controversy with his reckless, harmful, and provocative remarks made during his sermons. No one, no matter how high or low, may misuse Nigeria’s security as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution.
We do not support the Federal Government, but we are nonetheless important players in Nigeria’s endeavor, therefore, we must speak reason and decency to anyone who even slightly veers toward religious extremism.
“Everyone must refrain from doing anything that incites mistrust, suspicion, or needless strife among Nigerians if peace is to reign supreme.”
He stated that, unlike Gumi during President Muhammadu Buhari’s previous administration, Tinubu’s selection of his ministers and their actions should not be used as a ruse by anyone seeking accountability or a subdued threat to obtain the task of negotiating with bandits and terrorists.
