Hilltop Club applauds Ugwuanyi, House of Assembly, for his anti-open grazing stance

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state has been praised for signing the Anti-Open Grazing Bill into law by a socio-political and professional body.

Engr. Edmund Nnaji (Chairman) and Mr. Pascal Ozioko (Secretary) signed a letter commending the governor, expressing their delight at achieving “the legislative framework for dealing with the hydra-headed challenge” posed by open grazing of livestock across the country.

“We are elated and gratified to applaud you for the speedy assent into law of the Enugu State Prohibition of Open Grazing and Regulated Cattle Ranching and Connected Purposes Bill,” according to the group.

“Open grazing of cattle has become a critical topic in our national dialogue, requiring immediate resolution,” they wrote, adding that “the ancient nomadic rearing system is an unsustainable practice that has grown incompatible with modern society.”

“Open grazing of cattle is not only detrimental to modern farming and crop production, but it is also a major source of numerous atrocities attributed to herders, including but not limited to farmers/herders conflicts, wanton destruction of farm crops, kidnapping, killing, arson, rape, and so on,” they continued.

“In the overall benefit of Ndi Enugu, it has thus become important to control cattle/livestock husbandry business with suitable legal framework.”

“By signing the Bill into Law in record time, despite entrenched interests’ pressure, you have displayed unusual courage, very high level of responsibility, and outstanding dedication to duty,” they said.

“Now that the legislative foundation for dealing with the hydra-headed problem has been established, we implore you to provide the necessary platform for effective enforcement and execution of the law.”

The group also praised the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Edward Uchenna Ubosi, for taking the daring move of rallying the State Assembly members to pass the measure quickly.
