Approximately twenty-three members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have begun the impeachment process of Siminalayi Fubara, the state governor, amid gunfire and the use of tear gas inside the assembly premises.
The 23 legislators decided to start the procedure, with Speaker Martin Amaewhule presiding over the meeting.
The MPs also suspended several of their colleagues who they thought to be governor’s allies, including Edison Ehie, the head of the House.
As the chamber was being demolished on Sunday night, there was reportedly an explosion at the manufacturing plant.
Following the meeting, legislators were observed leaving the Assembly in a convoy led by heavily armed security guards at approximately 8:15 a.m.
People fled wildly as authorities chased them, including employees whose offices are within the building, after a gunshot and the release of tear gas.
