The governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) endorsed President Muhammadu Buhari’s choice for national chairman of the ruling party on Wednesday.
Atiku Bagudu, Chairman of the APC’s Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and Governor of Kebbi State, told reporters this after a meeting of the governors with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
He explained that the purpose of the meeting was to inform the President about the zoning of party offices, as well as to update him on the zones’ efforts to reach a consensus in their respective areas.

“Today, we all briefed Mr. President on that,” he said. Of course, this includes the issue of distributing political party offices to the various zones, as well as our support for Mr. President’s endorsement of the party’s nominee for National Chairman.
“And the various geopolitical zones took turns briefing Mr. President on what they have been doing in their respective zones to generate consensus among the National Working Committee and zonal party positions that have been allocated to the zones or to which the zones are entitled.”
“While the majority of the zones have been assigned National Working Committee positions that are less than the number of states, there are zonal executive committees from which the zones are working to produce a consensus list.”
“So, this afternoon, the respective zones; Governor Abubakar Bello for North-Central; His Excellency, Governor Babagana Zulum for Northeast; His Excellency, Governor Badaru Abubakar of Jigawa State for Northwest; His Excellency, Governor Dave Umahi for Southeast.” The President was briefed on the Southwest by Governor Kayode Fayemi. I also mentioned Mr. President’s position on the South-South, which I had written down.
“As a result, Mr President appreciated the briefing and expressed his gratitude for the work the governors have been doing in support of the party and in preparation for the National Convention,” he said.
Bagudu stated that the APC will encourage consensus in the distribution of party offices along the lines already approved by the party’s national leadership.
“Our party is a democratic party,” he continued, “and we will always urge consensus and respect for the party’s decisions because the distribution of political party offices here was approved by the party’s highest organ, the National Caretaker Committee, because they were acting in their capacity as the party’s National Executive Committee.” However, some people continue to choose to go against the grain, regardless of what the party constitution allows, because we would never do anything that is undemocratic.
“Mr. President has always urged consensus for all positions because consensus is in line with democratic tenets, and once you have leaders who are established, who are working toward the same goal, yes, we may have individual differences, as Governor El-Rufai once carefully explained, but on the principle of ensuring that we get leadership who will hit the ground running, we are united, and to that extent, who will support any process that will l
The PGF chairman stated that the party’s governors are united and supportive of President Buhari’s goals, and that he does not expect any surprises at the national convention next weekend.
“No, the governors are united,” Bagudu said when asked if there could be any surprises. Mr. President has the unanimous support of the governors. The caretaker committee has the unanimous support of the governors. We must express our gratitude to the Caretaker Committee for their efforts.
“Naturally, there will be snags along the way, but we’ve overcome them, and we’re a human organization, which is bound to elicit emotions and anxiety at times, but we’re united and unanimous, and by God’s grace, we’ll have a very successful and peaceful National Convention.”
