Uba Sani, the governor of Kaduna State, has allayed concerns that state governors might utilize state police to repress their political rivals if they were ever constituted.
Governor Sani met State House media following Thursday’s National Economic Council meeting in Abuja. He said that 36 state governors had sent in their opinions regarding the establishment of the state police, and each one had expressed resounding support.
Numerous calls for the creation of state police are strengthened by this development. But there have always been worries that certain state governors may abuse them.
However, Governor Sani stated in an interview with Politics Today on Friday that the National Assembly can allay concerns about governors abusing the state police.
Governor Sani stated that the National Assembly and those who will draft the legislation must grant the state police all the authority necessary to address the question of whether governors will utilize them (state police) against their opponents.
“When people get together and consider the benefits and drawbacks of certain provisions, that is the act of lawmaking.”
According to the governor of Kaduna, most Nigerian states would not have the insecurity that currently impedes economic operations, among other things, if the state police had been in place for three years.

Since most people live in the towns and are familiar with the area, he claimed that having state police would address the issue of intelligence collection and sharing among the nation’s security personnel.
Governor Sani stated that since most governors now set aside large sums of money to support the federal police, there won’t be much of an issue with state governments’ ability to pay for the state police.
According to the governor, state governors’ stances on the creation of state police are crucial since the National Economic Council cannot do this on its own.
He pointed out that as state houses of assembly play a significant part in the process, it is crucial to gather the opinions of every state before moving on. He said that doing this would streamline the procedure.
