Samuel Ortom, the immediate past governor of Benue State, revealed that the G5 or the Integrity Group inside the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) intended to back President Bola Tinubu in 2027 should he choose to run for reelection.
Ortom revealed this information on Sunday during a luncheon in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, that was organized by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike.
Ortom, Wike, Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the former governor of Enugu State, and Okezie Ikpeazu, the governor of Abia State, who was just elected, are the members of the G5.
In the February 25, 2023, presidential election, the group inside the PDP pushed against the party’s nominee, Atiku Abubakar, and supported Tinubu, a candidate from the South who ultimately won the vote.
The former governor of Benue lost his senate race and backed Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate, in the 2023 election. The G5 has no regrets over backing Tinubu in the presidential race, according to Ortom’s Sunday statement.
While Wike had stated in November 2023 that he would not run for president in 2027 should President Tinubu choose to run for reelection, Ortom claimed that the group had announced that it would back President Tinubu in that year.
“Our leader, Nyesom Wike, has already declared that we are supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027,” he stated.
“Because Nigerians hold that belief, we have nowhere to go. We even let the previous administration, which completely overhauled Nigeria, eight years to operate. Thus, why is it that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a seasoned administrator, is unable to lead us for eight years?
