Full-fledged fuel scarcity looms as NUPENG threatens strike

The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) has given the federal government a two-week strike notice, raising the prospect of fuel shortages across the country in the coming weeks.

This was stated in a statement signed on Monday by NUPENG President Williams Akhoreha and General Secretary Olawale Afolabi.

The strike notice was one of the decisions reached at the union’s special national delegates conference on Thursday, according to the union.
It cited nonpayment of workers’ salaries and benefits as one of the reasons for its decision.

One of the issues, NUPENG said, was the outstanding payment of terminal benefits to its members that were declared redundant in 2012 by the management of Chevron Nigeria limited.
