Muhammadu Buhari, the previous president, passed away.
On Sunday, July 13, 2025, his former adviser Bashir Ahmad reportedly posted via X to announce the former president’s passing.
According to his post, “Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, passed away this afternoon in a London clinic, according to the former president’s family.”

God bless him and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus. “Amin.”

After managing the nation as military head of state from 1983 to 1985, President Buhari was well-known for his anti-corruption policies and attempts to stabilize the economy. He was Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023.

It is anticipated that the family would provide more information about the funeral plans in compliance with Islamic customs.

While this was going on, Garba Shehu, the former Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to former President Muhammadu Buhari, disclosed that his former principal cut important government spending and turned down numerous expensive presents.

During the Tuesday launch of his recently published memoir, “According to the President: Lessons from a Presidential Spokesperson’s Experience,” in Abuja, Shehu described a number of occasions in which Buhari declined ostentatious benefits, such as a fleet of armored cars worth ₦400 million and a wristwatch adorned with diamonds.

In 2015, Buhari spoke to the top executives of a large construction company that worked on federal projects, Shehu recounted. According to him, the former president read the Riot Act in reference to bloated contracts and kickbacks.

He said, “On November 6, 2015, a delegation of the Board of Directors of the massive construction company that handles government contracts like roads, railways, bridges, and facilities management visited me at the State House, giving me the opportunity to clearly communicate this message to senior government officials and the business community.”

He said to the delegation, which was led by (name withheld), a former Group Chair of Shell Nigeria: “We have been informed that percentage cuts, 10 percent or more, are built into your contracts, to be shared among government leaders and civil servants”. We have to stop this. We won’t put up with kickbacks.

We have also been told that you, as the people in charge of big contracts, construct residences for government officials,” Buhari continued, according to Shehu. For the recipients, you purchase pricey cars and take care of them.
