Final rounds of BOS Youth Cup take off Wednesday

The semi-finals will be held on Friday, December 3rd, and the final will be held on Sunday, December 5th.

The BOS Youth Cup final will be held on Sunday, December 5 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, following weeks of grassroots football activities among youths in Lagos State.

The BOS Youth Cup, a football competition for youths under 21 years old from all Lagos State councils, is part of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration’s efforts to reduce restlessness and promote sports and youth development in the state.

The first edition of the BOS Youth Cup, which began in October, was organized by the BOS Academy and the office of the Lagos State Governor’s Senior Special Assistant (Sports), Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as well as SSAs from related youth and social development ministries.

Over 20 matches have been played so far across the State by the 20 teams, which were divided into five groups, according to Mr Tayo Sanyaolu, a member of the BOS Youth Cup Protocol and Logistic Committee.

He stated that the team with the most points in each group would advance to the quarter-finals, and that the three best losers would be chosen to join the five group leaders in the quarter-finals, making the total number of teams in the quarter-finals eight.

The tournament’s quarter-final matches will be held on Wednesday, December 1 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, and the semi-finals will be held on Friday, December 3 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan.

The BOS Youth Cup screening exercise, which took place across 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas in 20 centers to select players and teams for the football tournament, drew over 5,000 young people.

Trials of eligible players with LASSRA cards and the shortlisting of 23 players for the BOS Youth Cup, including three goalkeepers and 20 outfield players, took place at the local government/local council development area (LCDA) level to select All-Star Players for the 20 LGAs competing in the competition.

Mr Anthony Adeboye, the Lead of the Technical Committee of the BOS Youth Cup, recently spoke to journalists about the competition, saying that the football tournament has been well received by the target youths, and that the turnout of young people for the competition at every location is encouraging.

He described the BOS Youth Cup as one of the events for grassroots football development, noting that professionals are not permitted to participate in the tournament, which is only open to local government residents.

Adeboye also revealed that some scouting agencies and corporate organizations from both within and outside Nigeria are involved in the BOS Youth Cup tournament for football development, empowerment, and academic scholarships for players competing in the tournament to bring glory to themselves, their families, local governments, and Lagos State.
