The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development claims that it will deworm ten million students as part of a school feeding program to improve their health.
Dr. Umar Bindir, the National Coordinator of the National Social Investments Programme (NSIP), stated this on Monday in Abuja during a five-day Planning Meeting and Development of Information Education Communication (IEC) Materials.

Bindir, who was represented by Safiya Sani, the ministry’s Deputy Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics, emphasized the importance of deworming the students in order to improve their health.
“As we feed them, we must also deworm them so that the food can work properly in their system and improve their health.”
“We’ll be doing this on a regular basis because some of the foods may contain chemical agents or germs.”
So if we deworm them, they’ll be healthier and their brains will work better,” he explained.
Bindir stated that the deworming exercise would be for students in primary school, particularly those in public schools, and that it would not be limited to those who benefited from the home-grown school feeding program.
According to him, the national home-grown school feeding program is part of the Federal Government’s National Social Investment Program, and it aims to provide one free, nutritious meal every school day for students in primary one through three in public schools.
He explained that, in keeping with its multi-sectoral nature, the NHGSFP had incorporated adjunct school health and nutrition activities in its efforts to maximize the health benefits of free school meals for students.
“The main goal of this five-day meeting is to lay out the deworming exercise’s modalities, which include sensitizing the partners and ensuring their commitment.”
He added, “It will also develop and harmonise IEC materials and reporting template for the nationwide exercise.”
