Alhaji Haruna Pai Mohammed, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the FCT Chairmanship elections on February 12, 2022, has described the election in Kwali Area Council as a rape on democracy.
He also asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to annul the results, claiming that the process had been marred by large-scale irregularities.

Mohammed also called for harsh punishments against some traditional rulers who were accused of openly partisanship during the election by influencing voters at polling stations.
He went on to say that monarchs, as custodians of the people’s culture, should remain neutral while acting as fathers to election candidates in accordance with constitutional provisions.
Alhaji Haruna made the remarks to a group of journalists in Gwagwalada, Abuja, on Tuesday as they discussed the results of the FCT elections.
Haruna was narrowly defeated in the election by incumbent Kwali Chairman Danladi Bomboi Chiya of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“What happened in Kwali Area Council on February 12 was nothing but madness,” the candidate claims, adding that “the APC did not win any area council election in the just concluded FCT elections, It was not an election but rape on democracy.”
Some people, he said, are clamoring for war, but they haven’t considered who will lose if one tribe attacks another in a fit of rage.
“Are we supposed to kill each other as brothers because of the election?” There are Hausas, Bassas, Gwaris, and other tribes who have been peacefully intermarrying for a long time.
“What happened on election day demonstrated a lack of understanding of what democracy should be among many people.”

He emphasized that democracy is government by the people, for the people, and by the people, and that interest groups interfering in elections should not be allowed to do so in every election so that the country’s democracy can grow.
“I urge INEC to review the election results and call off the Kwali election,” he said. We will, however, appeal the results to the Election Tribunal.”
