Mercy Chinwo, a well-known gospel singer, was criticized by Rev. Fr. Chinenye Oluoma, a Catholic priest serving the Abuja Archdiocese, for charging N10 million to perform in churches. Oluoma made the statement in response to Chinwo’s pricing.
When speaking during a recent service, Father Oluoma criticized gospel musicians who demand enormous payments to perform in a place of worship. While doing so, he lamented the fact that religious worship has become increasingly expensive.
In a video that quickly went viral, a cleric stated once again, using Mercy Chinwo as an illustration, that the singer requests N10 million as a performance fee from churches.

He stated, “We have made it more expensive for people to worship their gods.” How much will I offer Mercy Chinwo in compensation if I have to bring her here so that she can sing? It is estimated that the fee for having a gospel performer of Mercy Chinwo’s status perform at an event or in a church has reached N10 million at this point.
“This is the tragedy that we have turned Christianity into, that an artiste will come to a church and lead praise and worship for N10m or N5m for ten minutes,” said one of the speakers at the conference. Therefore, if that particular performer doesn’t sing “Jesus, You Love Me Too Much,” it means that God didn’t love you as much as you think He did, right?
“Some individuals questioned whether or not they should be compensated. Why did you choose not to pay them? If you absolutely have to bring them, then you should compensate them for their time because the purpose of their presence is to provide you with entertainment. Worship has been replaced by a form of entertainment.

“We have imitated everything in the world. “In those days, nobody even knows the names of the people who composed the worship songs that we are still using today,” he said.
