A 2012 tweet by one of President Bola Tinubu’s aides, Olusegun Dada where he threatened to burn down a branch of Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB), has been dug out by netizens following his recent threat of meeting organizers of the planned EndBadGovernance protests with maximum force.
Though the post was initially meant to castigate government officials for their hardline stance against the planned protest, it turned into an avenue for many Nigerians to vent their anger on what the felt was the bad services being offered by the bank.
The post has ignited a flurry of comments from netizens on their experiences with the bank.
In the old tweet posted on February 10, 2012, Dada had said:
“I will burn up a GTB bank branch one day! Dis nonsense is getting too much.”
On July 23, 2023, a branch of the bank in Abuja went up in flames and though the fire incident was not attributed to Dada, his recent threat on the protesters have led to Nigerians digging up his old tweet, with many wondering if he had truly perpetrated the fire.
An X user with the handle @aussiechicng set the memory ball rolling with this post:
“There’s no smoke without fire” – this adage is particularly relevant in last year’s fire incident with @gtbank Abuja branch.
“I’m shocked to learn that this disgruntled miscreant threatened to burn down one of your branches and, unfortunately, his threat turned into a reality.
“As a concerned customer and advocate for responsible corporate practices, I urge @gtbank to take this incident seriously and investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident to avoid a repeat in the future.
“I urge GTBank to launch series of investigations on the miscreant responsible for the vandalism and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law. This will send a strong message that such criminality will not be tolerated.

“By taking proactive steps to address this concern, GTBank can not only prevent future incidents but also maintain its reputation as a responsible and customer-centric institution.”

Another X user with the handle @Queenlahustle summed the debate up with a pertinent question to Dada:
“Did you burn Gtbank or yes? Did you once call for violence or yes? Did you cry on National TV when asked to step down unjustly or yes?
“Pls shut up when men who have balls are talking. Take the back seat, that’s what cowards do. Thank you!”
