The problems resulting from Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections have been addressed by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
In a statement on Tuesday, the religious organization urged restraint while urging the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to take appropriate action.
Elections must be held and concluded in a free, fair, and credible manner for Nigeria to remain a democratic nation and for its stability and democratic consolidation, the CAN emphasized.

The Christian organization urged all political parties, candidates, and their supporters to act peacefully in order to avoid creating needless tension in the nation.
While demanding that all presidential candidates abide by the spirit and letter of the Peace Accord they signed before the elections, CAN, in a statement signed by its national President, Daniel Okoh, said: “We remind them that this is the only country we have, and we must do everything to keep it safe, united and peaceful.
“We also ask CAN to do everything within its power to ensure that the votes cast in the presidential and federal legislative elections last Saturday reflect the will of the people.
“Ideally, when people cast their ballots, the results should be announced by the electoral umpire after the votes have been counted. Anything less than that continues to be an anomaly in any democratic setting and competition.
Further, CAN noted that despite numerous assurances from the electoral umpire regarding its election readiness, INEC fell short of the general populace’s reasonable expectations.

The Christian organization further requested that the commission explain to Nigerians why the avoidable mistakes were not corrected.
