Hon. Dennis Idahosa, the deputy governor of Edo State, has called on the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) to do extensive research and apply the results of their scientific studies to improve public health.
He also encouraged them to start a corporation in the state that would manufacture vaccines.
In a statement signed by his chief press secretary, Friday Aghedo, the deputy governor made the call following his hosting of the Edo State Chapter of AMLSN on behalf of Governor Monday Okpebholo.
Idahosa claims, “As of right now, Nigeria as a whole does not have a vaccine manufacturing company or industry.
That worries me a lot. The nation’s heartbeat is this. I believe it is time for us to take action and do something that has never been done by any state in this nation. “Let Edo be the novice,” he decided.

In addition to thanking the laboratory scientists who paid him a courtesy call at his office at the Edo State Government House, he also praised their contributions and medical interventions, which he claimed had improved the state’s public health sector delivery system.
Idahosa reaffirmed, “Health comes in second after security,” citing Governor Okpebholo’s five-point SHINE Agenda and campaign manifesto. We are emphasizing health a great deal. What we are going to do with the health sector would please Edo State.
Idahosa promised the group that he would work closely with “the think tanks in the health sector based on raised areas of needs” to provide the government with interventions that would alleviate their stress and “look at the best way to proffer solution to some of these challenges.”
While congratulating the Edo State Government on their electoral and legal triumphs, Dr. Ekhaguere Ehigie, the chairman of the Edo State AMLSN Chapter, took some time to draw attention to the problems that beset laboratory practice in Nigeria.
He promoted the establishment of state-of-the-art molecular labs and the application of nanotechnology to improve disease diagnosis, precise test findings, and public health monitoring and surveillance.
