ECONOMIC HARDSHIP: Nigerian govt cuts allowances of stranded foreign students

The Federal Government has announced a reduction in allowances paid to foreign students by 12.7% due to the prevailing economic hardship in the country.
The foreign students affected by the reduction are those who are allegedly stranded in Russia, Morocco, and Algeria, among others.
The Federal Government’s decision to slash the students’ allowances was contained in a memo, dated July 23, 2024, signed by the Director of the Federal Scholarship Board, Ndajiwo H.A., on behalf of the Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman.
The students are studying under the Federal Government’s Bilateral Educational Agreement Scholarship which was established for the purpose of education exchange between Nigeria and the partnering countries.

The Federal Scholarship Board is supervising the scholarship under the Federal Ministry of Education.
Nigeria has been battling with dire economic hardship as prices of foodstuffs and other commodities keep skyrocketing amidst the high unemployment rate and insecurity making life tough for the masses.
This has snowballed into calls for a national protest though President Bola Tinubu had appealed to the youth to shelf their plans, noting that he was already addressing their concerns.
