A road safety expert has offered advice on how to protect drivers from fatigue and other dangerous driving behaviors.
To avoid fatigue, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) advises drivers to take a 15-minute break after every four hours of driving.
During a sensitization talk at The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Festac Town, Lagos on Sunday, Sikiru Aduloju, Assistant Corps Commander, Apapa Command, gave the advice.
He believes that driver fatigue can lead to accidents because tired drivers are more likely to make poor decisions.
He also advised drivers to avoid other factors that could lead to accidents, such as talking about sensitive topics on the phone or with a passenger while driving.
“We should not take calls while driving because even good news can cause destabilizing reactions,” he said.
Mr Aduloju warned against a condition he called “Road Accident Immunity Deception Syndrome” (RAIDS).
RAIDS, he claims, is a situation in which drivers are aware that their vehicles are defective but continue to drive them because they have prayed.
“Boarding a vehicle whose driver is completely inebriated or under the influence of drugs just because you prayed is dangerous,” he said.

He urged people to drive cautiously, especially during the “ember” months, which he described as a time when there are a lot of activities and movements.
Mr. Aduloju emphasized the importance of drivers considering others while driving.
“Good defensive drivers take into account other drivers’ actions and inactions.”
“Please don’t go too fast; think about the distance rather than the time,” he advised.
