Dr Chike Akunyili, widower of former director-general of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Prof Dora Akunyili, was assassinated by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
On his way to Enugu from Onitsha, where he attended a lecture in memory of his late wife, Akunyili was shot and killed yesterday.
In a statement, IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful stated that certain people were spreading misinformation about the organization.
He claims that the same people who killed Dr. Chike were also responsible for his wife’s death.

“We have no involvement in the ongoing political assassinations. We have often expressed our concern that certain callous politicians are using the situation in Biafra territory to kill their political opponents while blaming it on IPOB,” the statement said.
“The same individuals that assassinated Dora Akunyili’s husband also killed Dora. They are the candidates in today’s gubernatorial election in Anambra State.
“We have no concerns with Chike Akunyili, and we did not murder him; nevertheless, those responsible for this atrocity must cease and desist from using IPOB’s name. We don’t want anyone to point the finger at IPOB because we need to apprehend them; this is pure political assassination in Anambra State. “Agents are doing this to depict IPOB in a negative light in the face of widespread support and encouragement,” he added.
Prof Charles Soludo, a leading contender for the gubernatorial race in Anambra in November, narrowly avoided being attacked during an event a few months ago.
