Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu declared that the government will ensure that Nigerians who reside abroad participate in the formulation of policy.
He continued by saying that doing this would strengthen democracy in the nation and guarantee that Nigerians living abroad would give his administration the support it needs.
At the 2023 National Diaspora Day in Abuja, Tinubu, who was there in his chief of staff Femi Gbajabiamila’s stead, stressed the importance of diaspora support and contributions to national progress.
“Our nation is emerging into a new dawn of devoted efforts to ensure that national development assures peace and promotes prosperity for all of our nation’s people,” said Tinubu.
The support, assistance, and involvement of our brothers and sisters around the world are necessary for us to completely accomplish our aspirations in this area.
As a result, this administration will make every intentional effort to include Nigerians living abroad in the creation, execution, and evaluation of public policies, plans, and initiatives.
“May I also inform you that the Diaspora is welcome under this new democratically elected government. In order to mobilise support for the incoming administration and concretize our democracy, this will offer a platform for successful policies for the Diaspora, providing an example for other African nations to follow.
Adamu Lamuwa, the permanent secretary of the ministry of foreign affairs, said in a speech that Nigerians abroad must continue to work towards establishing a developed nation.
We have started a new phase of consolidating diaspora engagement to support national growth, according to Lamuwa.
To ensure the swift development of our great nation, even in a dynamic environment, this pace must be maintained.
The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, stated in her remarks, “Our theme is not only appropriate but a summary of NiDCOM’s overall mandate, which is to engage and harness the talent, skills, resources, and global exposure of Nigerians in the Diaspora for national development.
This year’s National Diaspora Day celebrations “are therefore expected to mobilise the Diaspora to key into some of the government’s programmes and to chart improved and better ways on how to achieve the positive results for national development within the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ of the government,” the statement reads.
