80 prisoners from the state’s various prisons have received forgives from Niger State Governor Umaru Bago.
The governor also gave his approval for the inmates to pay their fines right away so they can reunite with their families.
The gesture was made to commemorate 2023 Democracy Day, according to a statement made by Alhaji Abubakar Usman, Secretary to the State Government, on Monday in Minna.
Using the prerogative of mercy granted to the governor by the Constitution, he explained that the release of the prisoners was in accordance with that.
Usman stated that due to their advanced age, poor health, and good behaviour, the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy recommended the release of the 80 prisoners.
Usman urged the prisoners to seize the chance to work on worthwhile projects and avoid doing anything that might land them in jail again.
Additionally, he warned them to uphold the law and engage in lawful activities by utilising various empowerment windows.
