The European Union has stated that Russia is facing unprecedented isolation and that its economy will be subjected to the harshest sanctions ever imposed in response to its aggression against Ukraine.
Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief, said this on Thursday, as Russia launched a military attack on Ukraine’s borders.
“This isn’t a matter of blocs.” This isn’t about diplomatic power struggles. It’s a life or death situation.

Borell said in a broadcast statement, “It is about the future of our global community.”
According to him, these are some of Europe’s darkest hours since World War II ended.
He stated that Russia’s attack on its ‘neighbour’ ‘Ukraine’ is the most serious breach of international law and a violation of basic human coexistence principles.’
He stated that the EU emergency summit on Thursday will “agree and establish political guidance to adopt the strongest package, the harshest package of sanctions we have ever imposed on Russia.”
New sanctions against Russia, according to European Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen, will weaken Russia’s economic base and modernization capacity.
“Russia’s massive sanctions will target strategic sectors of the Russian economy by restricting access to key technologies and markets, as well as freezing Russian assets in the EU.”
“We will also prevent Russian banks from accessing the European financial market,” he said.
Russia’s target, she claims, is not only Ukraine, but also European stability and the international peace order as a whole.

Ursula von der Leyen stated, “We will hold President Putin accountable for that.”
