As part of preparation for the re-opening of Illela Border, the newly deployed Customs Area Controller, Sokoto/Zamfara Command, Comptroller Kamal Mohammed, paid a working visit to Illela Border Station on Tuesday to ensure all was set in anticipation of the last order.

Recall that following the recent military coup in the neighbouring country, the Niger Republic, which led to the seizure of power by the military junta and the arrest of the democratically elected President Mahmoud Bazoom, the leadership of the Economic Community of West Africa States ordered the closure of all land borders with the country with immediate effect.

The ECOWAS leaders, however, about a week ago, in their meeting in Abuja, reviewed some of the earlier sanctions imposed on the country, which included the restoration of power supplies and the opening of all land borders.

The comptroller, who was accompanied by his management team when addressing stakeholders, stated that “with the lifting of ECOWAS sanctions on the Niger Republic and the subsequent restoration of power supply to the Niger Republic.

“It is on this premise that I came to ensure all is set for the re-opening of the Illela Border. We await the last order.”

The CAC also charged stakeholders and security agencies at the border post with the need for cooperation, especially in the area of intelligence and information sharing, as well as joint operations towards safeguarding the national border.

He said, “With collaboration, each agency will be able to effectively and efficiently fulfil its assigned mandate.”

The Area Controller further appreciates the Customs Licencing Agents for their patience during the seven (7) months of border closure.

He stated, “We know it has not been easy for you, but God willing, it will soon become history.”

Comptroller Kamal Mohammed also thanked the Illela Community for their hospitality, stating that, as part of Corporate Social Responsibility, the service has awarded the construction of primary health care at the border station, which, when completed, will cater to both officers and the Illela community.

The Comptroller also paid homage to Sarkin Gobir of Gwadabawa, Muhammad Zayyanu, where he called on the Royal Father to educate his ward against the menace of smuggling to the economy of the country.
