The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reiterated that hydroxychloroquine hasn’t been validated as the cure for COVID-19.
According to the agency’s tweet on Tuesday, some trial drugs show promising results but are yet to be approved for use.
The tweets come after a U.S-based Nigerian medical doctor, Stella Immanuel, claimed Hydroxychloroquine, Zinc and Zithromax could cure coronavirus.
Immanuel had led a team of medical practitioners to the White House, alleging that the malaria drug has been effective in treating patients.
The NCDC, however, clarified that in Nigeria, the use of hydroxychloroquine was limited to clinical trials.
“The centre advised that the usage of this vaccine be restricted to the trials, urging Nigerians to take responsibility and avoid self-medication,” the NCDC said in a tweet.
“Remember, there is NO specific cure for #COVID19. Some trial drugs show promising results but are yet to be validated for use. In Nigeria, the use of hydroxychloroquine is ONLY limited to clinical trials.”
The World Health Organisation(WHO) had also said there was no specific medicine recommended for the prevention or treatment of the virus.
