Consider Nigerians, call a halt to the strike, Senate, Reps advise local doctors

The Senate and House of Representatives have urged resident doctors to end their strike and return to the negotiating table with the federal government.

On Monday, August 2, 2021, residents doctors under the auspices of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) went on strike again.

Medical services at a number of government-owned hospitals have already been impacted by the strike.

Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, chairman of the Senate committee on health, said the impact of the doctors’ strike on Nigeria’s overall health was enormous. He was speaking at the launch of a public health sensitization campaign organized by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

“Medical doctors are critical to the nation’s health,” he says. I implore them to think about the Nigerian people as a whole and end the strike.

“The federal government has already begun discussions with the doctors, which we hope will continue in order to reach a satisfactory conclusion.

In addition, Hon. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, chairman of the House Committee on Health Services, appealed to doctors to end their strike.

Earlier, NAFDAC DG, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, explained the purpose of the campaign, stating that it will begin on August 9 and end on October 9, 2021.

“The main goal of this sensitization program is to strengthen and broaden the scope of our informal and formal behavior change communication strategies in order to reach the most vulnerable communities, particularly at the grassroots,” she said.

“One of the most important aspects of our regulatory work is the dissemination of food and drug safety information. Nigeria is well-known for having a disproportionate share of the global problem of tainted medical products and unwholesome food.

“The threat posed by substandard and forged Personal Protective Equipment has been exacerbated by the arrival of the Covid-19 Pandemic (PPEs). As a result, the public awareness campaigns will play an important role in the Federal Government’s concerted efforts to inform, sensitize, educate, and alert the public about the dangers of ingesting and using those spurious regulated products.

“The campaign themes are multifaceted, with clear, concise, informative, and educative messages aimed at raising public awareness of the various infractions that have a negative impact on our healthcare delivery system.”
