Catch them young: TeleVision Nigerian hosts Democracy Day speech contest for schools

Rated amongst the fastest growing digital television network in the world, Television Nigerian (TVN), Wednesday hosted students from schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to a Democracy Day Speech Contest.

The maiden edition of the TVN leadership series democracy day contest is aimed at developing the mindsets of students and pupils in preparation for a successful career.

The event had in attendance participants from Government Secondary School Karu, Blooms College Karu, Redeemer Dominion City Intl and Community Secondary School Asokoro.

Other schools which participated in the contest are Loyola Jesuit College, Wisdom Field Academy, Flora Homes Academy, Epitome Model Islamic School, Government Secondary School Karshi among others.

Contestants were examined via a of six minutes public presentation, comportment, delivery and interaction with the audience.

Addressing participants at the occasion, Mr Linus Okorie, the Chief Executive Officer of Guardian of the Nation thanked organizers of the event for the innovation which according to him is amazing.

“My message for these young ones is simple and I want you to go home some ‘Katch’ because you are leader of tomorrow and you will make a difference in this country.

“Everyone seated here is a leader but you must wield the winner spirit and mentality. You must respect honour and integrity. Pick of a skill and become an expert in one thing. This is the age and you must choose an industry to learn and grow. You must start now by developing certain habits that will make you a leader”

According to him K stands for knowledge, A stands for attitude, S stands for Skills and H for Habits. Okorie donated a sum of 25,000 to the winning school.

Also speaking at the event, a former Presidential Aspirant, Mr Tope Fasua preached on the essence of managing the country’s economy which according to him is the greatest assets of the country.

Addressing participants at the event, the Head of News TVN, Charles Ibe encouraged participants to imbibe good leadership skills by keeping to date with unfolding events in the society.

Ibe advised students from participating schools to learn the tenets of leadership by building themselves through obedience to laid down rules and regulations in their respective schools and the society.

“If we develop young leader, we can influence the approach of citizens to certain issues from the family to the global scale.

“We are going to nurture young ones to pursue their dreams in all our series because you are all leaders of tomorrow. The time to develop self worth is now and this can be developed through mentorship”.

The event had in attendance dignitaries from all works of life including the political class, members of the academia and media groups.

High point of the event was the presentation of a star prize of 50,000 naira to the best participating school, Loyola Jesuit School.
