President Muhammadu Buhari has returned to Abuja after attending the United Nations General Assembly’s 76th Session in New York, United States of America, for a week.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, he returned to the country with a special request from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to assist in the restoration of socio-political order in troubled West African countries.
During an audience with Buhari on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly’s 76th Session, Guterres praised the president for his leadership roles in Africa as well as the stabilization of the West African sub-region.
The UN scribe noted that Africa, particularly West Africa, was generally regarded as a bastion of stability and good governance, but expressed grave concern about the recent reversal of fortunes in democratic rule in some parts of the West African sub-region, with coups deposing elected officials.
As a result, he urged Buhari to continue to lead, saying that he looked to Nigeria to help stabilize the sub-democracy region’s and governance.

On terrorism, the secretary-general praised Nigeria’s efforts to combat this global problem.
Guterres assured Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari of the UN’s continued support in her efforts to address the country’s current security and humanitarian challenges, particularly those involving Internally Displaced Persons.
The president praised Guterres’ global leadership and the 76th Session’s success.
