President Muhammadu Buhari has joined international leaders in mourning the death of India’s top military commander, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife, and 11 people in a helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu’s southern state.
The President called the killings “irreparable losses to the Indian military and the nation” in a statement to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.

The late Chief of Defence Staff was generally praised for reforming the Indian military and security forces.

“On behalf of myself, the Nigerian government, and the Nigerian people, I express our heartfelt condolences to the Rawat family, the families of the deceased, as well as the Indian Military and nation, as you grieve the Chief of Defence Staff, his wife, and 11 other fine crop of officers,” he added.
