Buhari cautions contractors and businesspeople against bribery.

President Muhammadu Buhari urged businessmen, contractors, and other privileged Nigerians who benefit from government patronage to always engage in Corporate Social Responsibility, rather than seeking to favor public officials with gifts and kickbacks, during a weekend speech in Daura, Katsina State.

“I don’t want your cheque,” President Buhari remarked when he paid a visit to the Emir of Daura, Dr. Umar Faruk Umar, at his palace. Instead than attempting to recoup kickbacks from public officials, including my office, go out and help our communities.

“We don’t want any checks or influence of any sort from anybody or any organization. Let them recall their social responsibilities as a corporation.”

Even as he assured the people that his heart remained with them, the President said that he would love to visit Daura more often if it weren’t for the exorbitant expense of presidential travels and exposing security troops to bad weather.
“We are renowned for agriculture, and I own a farm here. No one can stop me from coming every two weeks. However, the movement comes at a hefty price. “I’d prefer it be utilized to improve our schools, clinics, and hospitals,” the President said.

He went on to say that it was through God’s favor that Nigeria remained together as a nation despite divisions that led to a 30-month civil war.

“We want to thank God all of the time for keeping our nation united. The nation was plunged into political turmoil on January 15, 1966. We experienced a 30-month civil war that claimed the lives of over a million people.
“We continue to give thanks to God for keeping us together. We are thankful to everyone who cared about our unity and development. May God continue to provide them with blessings,” he said.

Despite his busy schedule, the Emir of Daura praised the President for always making time to visit his hometown and the palace.

“Your visit to Daura exemplifies your excellent character, which we admire. I can tell you that men, women, children, marketers, and craftsmen are always delighted to see you and will pray for your well-being.

“Today is an appreciation day, not a day for speeches. Because you are the president of the nation, we have been so fortunate as a community. You have enhanced the prestige of our domain.

”The increasing flow of individuals and organizations coming to assist us here has benefitted us much as a community. It’s because of you, we know.
“May the good Lord constantly go before of you and behind you, removing all impediments in your way,” he said.

The Emir said that the President must stay focused on achieving achievements, especially in the area of national security.

“Nigeria is fortunate to have you now. I’m not saying it to please you, but it would have been extremely tough if you hadn’t been in power. He said, “I doubt we’ll be here today.”
