The Federal Government of Nigeria has hinted that the two-month ban on the social networking site Twitter will be lifted soon.

As previously stated, it has reached an agreement with Twitter in most areas of misunderstanding.

Remember that on June 5, 2021, the FG officially banned Twitter indefinitely, preventing it from operating in Nigeria, after the social media platform deleted tweets from the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, warning the Indigenous People of Biafra that they would be “treated in the language they understand.”

The FG interpreted Buhari’s tweet deletion as impolite, citing “a litany of problems with the social media platform in Nigeria, where misinformation and fake news spread through it have had real world violent consequences.”

While fielding press questions at the State House following Wednesday’s FEC meeting, Lal Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, updated Nigerians on the situation, saying that progress has been made in resolving the stalemate following a series of meetings.

Mohammed went into detail about the conditions imposed on Twitter, claiming that the majority of them had been met.

He stated that issues such as Twitter establishing an office and having a Twitter management cadre serve as the country representative are still being discussed.

The Minister also stated that, while Twitter has agreed to the condition of establishing a Nigerian office, it believes that the earliest it can do so is in 2022.

He expressed confidence that everything will be resolved with Twitter within “a matter of days or weeks,” noting Nigerians’ anxiety.

He stated that the FG’s negotiating committee with Twitter will meet soon to make recommendations on the agreement.
