Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, the sole administrator of Rivers State, has formally turned over power to Sim Fubara, the state’s reinstated governor.

During his last state-wide broadcast, Ibas called on the populace to back Fubara as he returns to his responsibilities as state leader.

When he declared an emergency in Rivers State six months ago, President Bola Tinubu suspended Fubara.

The president reinstated Fubara yesterday and lifted the emergency rule.

Ibas did, however, say in his broadcast: “My dear inhabitants of Rivers State, I speak to you today for the last time as administrator of our beloved State with humility in my spirit and thankfulness in my heart.

Six months ago, Tinubu gave me the grave duty of leading Rivers State through a very remarkable period in its history.

“With God’s help and our combined efforts, I can state with confidence that the mandate has been fulfilled today.

Elections for local governments have been held, law and order has returned, and people-elected chairmen are currently in power.

The National Assembly has approved the state budget, and the reconstituted statute boards and commissions are carrying out their mandates, offering a valid institutional foundation for government. We can all take pride in these achievements, which show how resilient people are and how they are committed to keep their state from becoming paralyzed.

One of the most lasting lessons of this season is that unbridled power can destroy institutions, and unbridled rivalry is obviously dangerous for democracy.

“I am deeply grateful for this assignment since I have encountered exceptional men and women in this state bureaucracy who are committed to our state and dedicated in their work. The sensible counsel and direction of statesmen who always spoke the truth has been beneficial to me.

“I now confidently and respectfully return the reins of leadership to Sim Fubara, and I implore all Rivers residents to fully support him, as followership and leadership are shared responsibilities.

“No matter how capable and well-defined a goal is, it can only be realized and flourish with the active participation of residents. Another phase of my life dedicated to serving at sea, in diplomacy, and now in government comes to an end with this.
