Nasir El-rufai, the governor of Kaduna state, is planning to shut down telecommunications services in the state due to insecurity.
This is due to the state’s increasing insecurity. El-rufai told radio journalists in the state on Tuesday that the move was part of an offensive against bandits who were taking refuge and wreaking havoc in the state.
“The Military and other security agencies have advised us to shut down telecommunications services in certain LGAs, but we are waiting for the security agencies to tell us which specific areas and when.”
“However, I want the people of Kaduna State to understand that if they give us the green light tomorrow [Wednesday], we will shut down tomorrow.”
“There is no doubt that bandits and other criminals rely on telecommunication to communicate with informants and relatives of kidnapped victims in order to demand ransom,” he said.
He revealed that since the shutdown of telecoms services in neighboring Zamfara and Katsina states, bandits have been crossing into the state.
The governor also revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the directive.
