On Thursday, security personnel tried to apprehend Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, at the airport when he arrived from Cairo, Egypt.
Muyiwa Adekeye, his media assistant, revealed this in a post on his 𝕏 account.
He claims that when the security guards tried to arrest El-Rufai, the former governor objected and insisted on a written invitation, following which they obtained his passport from an assistant.
Adekeye’s statement says: “Malam Nasir Elrufai landed on an aircraft from Cairo today, and security personnel tried to arrest him. Not having received an official invitation, Malam El-Rufai refused to follow them. But they took his passport away from an assistant.
El-Rufai had previously expressed concern that the Federal Government, led by the All Progressives Congress (APC), would be planning his arrest in light of the nation’s escalating political unrest.
A former leader of the APC who is currently a leader of the opposition African Democratic Congress, El-Rufai, also asserted that some lawmakers were under pressure to either stay in the ruling party or defect.
In a BBC Hausa interview, he made the assertions.
The former governor claimed that while he had not been arrested, some of his close allies had already been taken into custody. He has recently increased his criticism of the APC and President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
