The parliament’s statement is as follows:
An Extra-Ordinary Session of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament will be held to in-depth review recent political developments in the Republic of Niger. The virtual session is planned to begin at 10 a.m. (local time, Abuja) on Saturday, August 12, 2023.
“Several ECOWAS Member States were encouraged to take bold actions toward achieving peace and security via the development of democracy and good governance by the early 1990s as a result of the significant changes that took place in the political and economic landscape of the world in the late 1980s.
“As a result, the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance entered into force in 2001, signaling a significant turning point in the political development of the sub-region. Multi-Party democracies rose to power as military regimes and one-party systems crumbled.
