For defecting to the governing All Progressive Congress, APC, a Federal High Court in Abuja has fired 20 members of the Cross River State House of Assembly.
Before their defection, the lawmakers were members of the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP.
The court ruled that parliamentarians should forfeit their seats after abandoning the political party that helped them gain power.
The verdict was handed down by Justice Taiwo Taiwo in the case FHC/ABJ/CS/975/2021, which was brought by the PDP.

“The actions of the 5th to the 25th Defendants are feeble and amount to an attempt to deceive the court,” he said.
Justice Taiwo ruled that “their counter affidavit is clearly faulty.”
As a result, he approved all of the PDP’s requests, telling politicians that power belonged to the people.
