On Thursday, President Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) met with leaders and stakeholders in the South-East.
The meeting took place during President Obama’s visit to Imo State, which coincided with agitation for an Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Separatists have ordered a sit-at-home on Mondays since the return of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to detention in Nigeria.
Nnamdi Kanu had previously been extradited by Nigerian authorities. Nnamdi Kanu was brought back, according to officials, after he jumped bail and went on the run in 2017.
His family and lawyers claim he was kidnapped, tortured, and flown back to Nigeria in June while in Kenya.
“After going around Owerri to commission a series of infrastructure projects by Governor Hope Uzodinma, the President is now participating in a Town Hall Meeting with South East Leaders,” a presidential aide, Tolu Ogunlesi, wrote on Facebook.
Buhari had previously stated that he would assist Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma in dealing with security breaches in the state.

Buhari said he was impressed with the state’s level of development while commissioning the Egbeada-Onitsha bypass road in Owerri.
“I went around and was impressed with what I saw,” the president said. A society without security and infrastructure will not progress, and I am fortunate that the governor of Imo state shares my vision. I will exercise my constitutional authority to force the governor to accomplish more.”
The governor urged the president to address the issues of insecurity and flooding that he said were ravaging Owerri, the state capital, in his speech.
