DCP Abba Kyari, the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, has arrived at a Federal High Court in Abuja with six others.

On Monday, the Nigerian government announced that Kyari would be charged with eight counts of drug trafficking.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) will arraign Kyari and six others before Justice Emeka Nwite of a Federal High Court (FHC) in Abuja.

Sunday J. Ubia, Bawa James, Simon Agirigba, and John Nuhu are among the other defendants in the FHC/ABJ/57/2022 charge. The defendants are police intelligence response team members (IRT).

Two alleged drug traffickers, Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne, were arrested at Enugu’s Akanu Ibiam International Airport.

Kyari and the four other police officers were charged with conspiracy, obstruction, and dealing in 17.55 kilograms of cocaine by Joseph Sunday, the NDLEA director of prosecution and legal services.

Kyari and his men were also accused of tampering with 21.25 kilograms of cocaine.

Umeibe and Ezenwanne were accused of conspiring with others in the country to bring in 21.35 kilograms of cocaine.

Meanwhile, Inibehe Effiong, a human rights lawyer, has urged the agency to postpone filing charges against Kyari, the disgraced police chief.

After attempting to bribe an NDLEA official with $61,000 to facilitate the release of seized cocaine, the suspended police chief was remanded in custody.

Kyari is also wanted by the US government for allegedly committing wire fraud, money laundering, and identity theft.

Effiong stated that arraigning Kyari on drug-related charges would have an impact on his extradition to the United States.

The NDLEA, on the other hand, announced on Monday that it had filed charges against Kyari and others on February 28.
