Boko Haram: Members’ repentance is a positive development – Governor Buni

The recent massive repentance of Boko Haram insurgents, according to Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, is a positive development.

Buni made his position known on Wednesday when he paid sympathy visits to the Emirs of Damaturu, Fika, and Pataskum over the recent flood disaster that claimed many lives, displaced many households, and destroyed property in their respective domains, according to a statement released by his spokesman, Mamman Mohammed.

He described the recent massive repentance of Boko Haram members as a positive development, and urged residents of the state to continue praying for the state and the country.

Governor Buni prayed, “We should be optimistic about this development and pray that this is the end of the insurgency.”

Buni is the most recent prominent Nigerian to express optimism about Boko Haram’s repentance, which has elicited mixed reactions from Nigerians.

Some Nigerians believe the repentant insurgents should be prosecuted for war crimes against Nigeria and Nigerians, while others have opposing views.

In a recent interview with journalists, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, stated that due to international conventions, Nigeria will not prosecute repentant Boko Haram terrorists.

He claimed that calls for the repentant fighters to be prosecuted and killed rather than granted amnesty were contrary to international best practices.
