Four verified deaths have resulted from the alleged cultists’ Easter Sunday attack on the Swali community in Yenagoa, Bayelsa.
The assault reportedly caused injuries to a number of community members.
Newsmen were informed by a local, who asked not to be named, on Tuesday that the attackers were wearing masks.
The homeowner claimed that in keeping with the Easter spirit, the attackers arrived at midnight in a Toyota Hilux van, armed with AK-47 rifles, and opened fire on the residents without distinction.
According to reports, the Greenlanders and Bobos, two opposing cult organizations, were fighting for supremacy over control of a market’s earnings.
Ayibanegiyefa Egba, a member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly who represents Yenagoa Constituency 1, denounced the attack.
Egba expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost loved ones during his visit to the community on Tuesday, saying: “This attack is brutal.”

I urge everyone who lives there to remain alert and unified in the face of this catastrophe. I also exhort young people to avoid vices that can shorten their lives and outside influences.
According to DSP Musa Mohammed, the Bayelsa Police Public Relations Officer, who verified the attack, security has been strengthened in an effort to bring the community back to normal.
“The community is back to normal, and security measures have been implemented to prevent any more breakdowns in law and order or the loss of life or property,” Mohammed stated.
