The Bauchi State House of Assembly has expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of education in the state.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Honourable Babayo Akuyum, announced this at the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board’s inauguration of Education Secretaries for the 20 Local Government Area Education Authorities (SUBEB).

The poor state of education, according to Akuyum, was unacceptable because the current administration was committed to repositioning the sector.

He did, however, charge the new education secretaries to work hard by ensuring that they monitored teachers’ attitudes toward their work, produced lesson plans for their students, and submitted quarterly reports on their activities.

The Executive Chairman of the Board, Dr Abubakar Sirimbai, spoke shortly after inaugurating the secretaries who had received their appointment letters from the Board, saying that their selection was based solely on merit and that they should view their appointments as an opportunity to serve the State.

He urged them to not only be committed to their jobs, but also to be honest and hardworking, and to set a good example for both students and teachers in their respective areas of authority.

“Your appointment is merit-based, and you must carry out your responsibilities with dedication, honesty, hard work, and responsibility. Because this administration has zero tolerance for bad behavior, laxity toward official duties, and any misconduct will not go unpunished, you should be role models for the students and teachers in your respective local governments,” Sirimbai said.

He charged them to work with their subordinates in their local governments to achieve results by guiding them through the performance of their duties.

The Permanent Secretary of the Board, Usman Kawu, told the secretaries that they were entrusted with the major task of supervising the affairs of education in their respective domains and that they should go out into the fields rather than sit in their offices.

“Your primary responsibility is that of a supervisor; you are to go out and see things for yourself rather than relying on rumors in your offices. This will assist you in providing accurate reports and ensuring proper supervision,” he explained.

“We expect you to use the funds judiciously and transparently,” Kawu said, adding that the state governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, had approved the sum of N300,000 as their monthly operating cost.
