Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, the newly affirmed National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has stated that the party’s mission under his leadership is to rescue the country from the current mess caused by the APC-led government’s misrule since 2015.
Ayu, who spoke early Sunday morning, praised the PDP’s delegates and governors for organizing a smooth and peaceful national convention.
He, on the other hand, challenged the APC to hold its national convention with over 90 state factional chairmen, claiming that some members of the party believed the PDP would split up as a result of the convention.
Senator Ike Ekweremadu, a former Deputy President of the Senate, congratulated Ayu and the other 20 national officers-elect who were elected at the party’s recently concluded national convention.
“I want to sincerely appreciate the PDP family,” Ayu said in his appreciation speech after 3,426 delegates affirmed his election as chairman. Today’s message is merely a thank-you note. We had no idea when we started this party 23 years ago that the journey would lead us to this point.
“We went through a period where we ruled for 16 years, but anyone who bothered to look can see that the PDP is back.” PDP has returned to save Nigeria from the abysmal state it has been in for the past six years. I’d like to express my gratitude to all of you who have contributed to the success of this event as delegates, observers, supporters, members of the media, and security personnel.
“Many people predicted that the PDP would split up as a result of this convention. Those individuals who were dreaming in this manner were dreaming in Wonderland. Their dreams were erroneous.

“Those who have given up hope should keep in mind that Nigeria is not a divided country.” Nigeria was divided by a small group of people. PDP will return to bring our people together, uniting them from north to south, east to west.
“We will forge ahead with the development of this country.” We’ve done this before. We’re going to do it all over again. I’d like to express my gratitude to the governors. I’d like to express my gratitude to the delegates. I’d like to thank all of our supporters and everyone who helped make this event a huge success.
“I believe the other party will never be able to hold a convention, because they can’t even hold a state congress.” How can they hold a successful convention, as the PDP did, when they have 92 state chairmen for 36 states? We’re looking forward to seeing them. This is a test for them. Allow them to come on pole searches, which will be successful on the ledger with what the PDP has accomplished. This is a notice of resignation. “The PDP has returned and is reclaiming the country in order to develop it,” he declared.
The PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) elected a new set of members to take over the party’s leadership.
At the national convention, which began on Saturday, October 30 and ended on Sunday, October 31, at Eagle Square in Abuja, twenty-one people were elected.
After 3,426 delegates affirmed his unopposed position, Ayu was named national chairman. The election results were announced in the wee hours of yesterday.
Similarly, Senator Samuel Anyanwu of Southeast was elected as the party’s National Secretary without opposition.
We previously reported that 18 of the 21 positions on the National Working Committee (NWC) were uncontested.
The position of Deputy National Chairman (South) was hotly contested, with Amb. Taofeek Arapaja winning with 2,004 votes cast at the party’s convention.
Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, his closest rival, received 705 votes.
Mohammed Kadade Sulieman won the position of National Youth Leader with 3,072 votes against Usman ElKudan’s 219 votes, while Umar Iliya Damagum won the position of Deputy National Chairman (North) with 2,222 votes against former Minister of Women Affairs, Hajia Maryam Ina Ciroma’s 365 votes.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, Chairman of the Convention Planning Committee and Chairman of the Electoral Sub-Committee, announced the results and thanked party faithful for a “successful convention.”
Ahmed Yayari Mohammed, national treasurer, and Kamaldeen Adeyemi Ajibade, national legal adviser, were also elected through the party’s unopposed election, which received 3,426 votes.

Meanwhile, Ekweremadu said in an Abuja statement issued by his Media Adviser, Uche Anichukwu, that the emergence of Ayu and other national officers would provide the PDP with the much-needed renewed vigour and focus needed to save Nigeria.
The ranking Senator also praised the party’s leadership, led by Elder Yemi Akinnwonmi, and the National Convention Planning Committee, led by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, for holding smooth and transparent elections, saying the PDP had disappointed her evil wishers.
“Congratulations to the newly elected national officers of our great party, the PDP,” he said. I have no doubt that we got it right, given the pedigree and antecedents of our National Chairman-elect and his team.
“Nigeria is in desperate need of rescuing from divisiveness, criminal cartels, vaunting bandits and insurgents, a collapsing economy (to put it mildly), and secessionist agitations sparked by injustice and marginalization.
“There is no doubt that we have in place a highly promising team led by Distinguished Senator Iyorchia Ayu, a widely-accepted, disciplined, experienced, and pan-Nigerian politician who will help mobilize party faithful and Nigerians at home and abroad for the success of this mission.”
