Ayiri Arraigned for Allegedly Stealing Olu of Warri’s Crowns worth N2bn

Ayirimi Emami, the deposed Ologbotsere of Warri Kingdom, was arraigned in a Warri Chief Magistrates’ Court yesterday for allegedly stealing two royal crowns worth N2 billion from Warri Kingdom.

Emami, along with others now at large, allegedly committed the offence around 11.30 p.m. on March 30 this year in the house of the Olu of Warri, according to the charge sheet with No: MW/178 C/ 2021.

“That on the 30th of March, 2021 at about 11:30 pm at Olu of Warri Palace, Warri, you Chief Ayirimi Emami (m) and others now at large conspired among yourselves to commit felony, to wit, Burglary and Stealing and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Cap C21 Vol. 1, Laws of Delta 2006,” the charge read.

“That you, Chief Ayirimi Emami (m) and others now at large broke into a dwelling house of the Olu of Warri on March 30, 2021 at about 11:30 p.m. at Olu of Warri Palace, Warri, in Warri, in Warri Magisterial District, with intent to commit a felony and thus committed an Offense Punishable Under Section 411 of the Criminal Code Cap C21 Vol. 1, Laws of Delta 2006, with the intent to commit

“That you Ayirimi Emami (m) and others now at large stole two crowns valued at two billion naira, properties of Itsekiri Kingdom, on March 30, 2021 at about 11:30 p.m. at Olu of Palace, Warri, in Warri Magisterial District, and thus committed an Offense Punishable Under Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap C21 Vol. 1, Laws of Delta 2006.”

Emami has entered a not guilty plea to all three charges.

Mr. Emmanuel Uti, the accused’s lead counsel, urged the court to grant his client bail, saying the accused was willing and ready to appear in court whenever he was summoned.

SP Sunday Irabor, a prosecuting attorney for the police, said the court had the final say on whether or not to grant bail. He did, however, call for a strict bail condition, emphasizing the importance of dependable sureties.

On behalf of Olu of Warri Palace, Mr. Fabius Jemide Atie held a watch brief.

The accused were granted bail with two sureties and N2 million each, according to Chief Magistrate Diejomaoh.

She ruled that the sureties must be civil servants on Grade Level 15, and they must provide their passports, body photographs, and National means of identification.

The case has been postponed until January 19, 2022.
