To protest the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ strike, the National Association of Nigerian Students has urged students to occupy the streets of Abuja with their personal belongings.

Sunday Asefon, the NANS President, said this in a letter to the union’s zonal coordinators headlined, ‘Urgent Notice Of Immediate Commencement Of Mobilisation,’ dated March 25, 2022, and advised students to bring cooking utensils and beds.

“Sequel to our ultimatum given to the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities to find a sustainable solution to their standoff so that our university may reopen on or before March 28, 2022,” it said.

With no prospect of restoration of academic activity on our campuses, you are now ordered to begin mass mobilization of students to resume their academic activities at the newly established University of Street, Abuja, as soon as possible.

“Students are encouraged to bring cooking utensils, beds, mosquito-treated nets, and other necessary logistics to make the stay as comfortable as possible, since the protest may extend longer than intended until campuses are reopened.”

“Abah Owoicho, the NANS Zone C Organizer, has been named Registrar of the New University of Abuja Street and coordinator of the mass occupational protest.”

“Please accept our best wishes as we await your prompt consideration for quick action.”
ASUU said on March 14 that it had extended their four-week warning strike by two months, which it had launched on Monday, February 14.

Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, the union’s leader, said the decision to prolong the strike was decided to allow the Federal Government and its agencies ample time to address the union’s remaining requests.
