It has been requested that the Federal Government recognize and pay tribute to the late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, who was responsible for the legitimacy of the June 12, 1993, election that was canceled.

Yesterday in Enugu, retired Archbishop of Enugu Province (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, made the plea and demanded that General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), the former military head of state, be held accountable for the crimes he admitted to committing against Nigeria.
Nwosu, who presided over the National Electoral Commission (NEC) at the time and supervised the historic election held on June 12 that Babangida canceled, died on October 24, 2024, without being honored nationally for his patriotic service. The date of his burial is March 28.

At his recent book launch, Archbishop Chukwuma responded to Babangida’s confession by denouncing the government’s and Nigerians’ silence on Nwosu, who he claimed was instrumental in the election that is now known as Democracy Day.

Humphrey Nwosu is now deceased, and although it is widely accepted that he presided over Nigeria’s most credible election, he received no national honor. Abiola and Kingibe were honored, while the man who ran the election was disregarded. Chukwuma said that Humphrey Nwosu had been treated unfairly by Nigeria.

Nwosu should receive a posthumous national award, he demanded, and the government should erect a monument in his honor. Additionally, he asked that his burial be handled by the federal government.

All of Babangida’s statements in his book, including his sorrow and admission that MKO Abiola won the election on June 12, are complete and utter bullshit! It is an insult to Nigerians and a huge letdown.

“If I had my way, IBB should be imprisoned for uttering such a statement after defrauding the entire nation.”

He also denounced Babangida’s assertion that the election should be canceled for Nigeria’s sake, calling it a flagrant fabrication.

In his own words: “We still can’t hold a credible election, and Nigerians are suffering today due to poor leadership.” Babangida confesses too late, after Abiola and Nwosu have passed away. He ought to express regret to their families as well as the Nigerian people.

Nwosu’s services to democracy should be acknowledged by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the Archbishop said, cautioning that failing to do so would demonstrate that the current administration is likewise involved in subverting legitimate elections.
