Some key party members discovered, via leaked documents, how President Muhammadu Buhari single-handedly dictated the composition of the party’s next Executive Committee, indicating that the party’s divisions may have deepened further.

The APC has been beset by conflicts of interest, with its leaders jockeying for control of the party’s incoming leadership and, by extension, the right to choose the party’s next presidential flagbearer.

President Buhari has purposefully avoided naming or endorsing his successor, but handpicking the APC Executive Committee, according to party insiders, will allow him to choose who runs for the party’s ticket on his own.
According to documents obtained by this newspaper on Friday, President Buhari personally endorsed all of the plans and candidate choices presented to him by a faction of the party reportedly made up of some northern governors and ministers in his cabinet.

According to the documents, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved Senator Abdullahi Adamu as National Chairman, Senator John Akpanudoedehe of the south-south geopolitical zone as National Secretary, and Senator Ken Nnamani of the south-east as Deputy National Chairman (South). Other positions that have been pinned down to geopolitical zones were also approved by the president.

“Baba (President Buhari) endorsing the zoning formula and the candidate has closed any further debate on the matter,” a source close to Kaduna Government House said, requesting anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.

“Even if it is their own brother who is given this position, people will make a fuss.” So, at some point, someone has to make a decision to put an end to some of this back and forth,” he explained.

The President first endorsed a set of documents outlining zoning arrangements on March 1, 2022, before endorsing Adamu and others on February 25, 2022, according to the documents.

A senior party official who objected to the deal but did not want to be identified lamented that a bad precedent had been set that would weaken Nigeria’s democracy.

“President Buhari has the right to show the direction the party should go as the de facto leader of the party,” he said, “but this aspect of one person sitting in a parlor and constituting the APC Exco is bad news for Nigerian democracy.” We cannot afford the luxury of silence when dictatorship bares its fangs.

“What is the point of wasting time and resources on an elective national convention when the President and a few governors formed the Exco in their spare time?” “We will file a legal challenge,” he stated.

Another chieftain, who also requested anonymity, expressed concern that President Buhari could have directed those he wanted to be elected to the Exco verbally rather than committing ink to paper as he did.
