Amusan ecstatic after winning the Diamond League and setting an African record

TOBI Amusan is ecstatic to have become the first Nigerian to win a Diamond League championship.

The 24-year-old, who missed out on a medal in the 100m hurdles at the Tokyo Olympics, ran the fastest race of her life to win her event, clocking 12.42 seconds to break Glory Alozie’s 23-year-old African record.

Visser Nadine of the Netherlands came in second with a national record and personal best time of 12.51 seconds, while Jamaica’s Tapper Megan came in third with a time of 12.55 seconds.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medalist said, “It’s great, it’s a great feeling.”

“In retrospect, I don’t think I won a medal at the Olympics. After that, it was a difficult time for me, but I never gave up, and I came out here thinking that if I didn’t win a medal in Tokyo, the least I could do was win a Diamond League Trophy, which I just did!

“The hurdles is a very mental event, and my coach always tells me to focus on myself and execute,” says the athlete.

“Once you get the hang of it, you won’t have any trouble getting over the stumbling blocks. I’m glad I came out on top. I have one more meeting in Zagreb before I can take a break from the season. It’s something I’m really looking forward to.”
