Senate President Godswill Akpabio has issued a formal apology to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for remarks he made during last week’s plenary session, where he rebuked her and said the Senate is not a “nightclub.”
Akpabio’s comments had sparked controversy on social media, with various women’s groups accusing him of sexism and disrespect towards women.
Addressing the Senate during Tuesday’s plenary session, Akpabio expressed regret over his words and emphasized his respect for women.

He stated, “I will not intentionally denigrate any woman and I always pray that God will uplift women. Distinguished Senator Natasha, I want to apologise to you. The interest shown in the social media shows that we have enemies. I felt I should tender a public apology to you. I do not mean any harm. People should concentrate on things that will move this country forward. Social media handlers should practice with decorum. We won’t, out of anger, regulate social media.”
Additionally, Akpabio refuted claims circulating on social media regarding his personal life, stating firmly, “I have only one wife and she is enough for me.”
