The Akwa Ibom Police Command has announced the arrest of a lawyer, Ekere Sunday Ebong, following the release of a viral video in which he was seen physically beating his wife.
SP Odiko MacDon, the state Police Public Relations Officer, verified this in a statement released on Monday.
The culprit was apprehended, according to MacDon, on the orders of the state Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi.
“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested one Barrister Ekere Sunday Ebong (55 years) of Plot 40 L Line Ewet Housing Estate,” stated the announcement.
“In a video that went viral, the suspect assaulted his wife and dehumanised her, leading to various grievous injuries.
“He is a known habitual perpetrator of violent acts against his wife over the years.”
“As an agency charged with the protection of lives and property as well as the maintenance of law and order, we cannot allow Barrister Ebong to continue this flagrant violation of human rights.”
In order to stop murder and the collapse of law and order, Commissioner of Police CP Olatoye Durosinmi issued an order for the suspect’s arrest.”
The CP has called on those who commit violent crimes in the state to stop right now and encouraged family members to try to settle disagreements peacefully rather than using force.
