The majority of Africa’s issues, such as coups, sluggish economic growth, and insecurity, according to former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, will be significantly lessened if Africans elect leaders who will uphold national laws.

Speaker Jonathan emphasized the need of choosing leaders who will uphold national laws, saying that doing so would address a significant number of the continent’s issues at the second annual retreat of Regional Economic Communities (RECs), which was hosted by the International IDEA in Abuja on Tuesday.
The ECOWAS special envoy, Jonathan, has called for talks including influential political figures to explore the balance between strong institutions and strong leaders in governance, especially in African nations that are dealing with strong leaders and institutional issues.

Jonathan stressed the need of inclusivity and good governance in a statement released by his Special Advisor, Ikechukwu Eze, following the summit. He pointed out that a growing number of military coups, particularly in West Africa, have made it difficult to persuade people that civilian administrations are superior to military ones.

Special committees like this one are intended to examine and suggest solutions for the several issues that African democracy is currently facing, according to Jonathan. These challenges include the rise of coup d’états, public dissatisfaction, increased insecurity, and difficult economic circumstances.

“Development and democracy are closely related,” I have consistently stated.

“We must elect officials who uphold the law. The previous head of Nigeria stated, “I think 70 percent of our problems would be solved if our leaders—presidents, prime ministers, the parliament, and the judiciary—would follow our laws.

Moreover, he exhorted African leaders to behave in the best interests of everybody and abstain from policies that would further polarize their countries and separate their populations.
