Chief Afe Babalola, a legal luminary, has criticized the deployment of high court justices at the nation’s election petition tribunal.
Afe Babalola University’s Alfa Belgore Hall in Ado-Ekiti, ABUAD, hosted “the 60 Years at the Bar,” where the legal titan spoke.
Chief Babalola claimed that the Nigerian judiciary required a complete revamp and claimed that for a number of recent months, the courts had been unable to convene and hear cases.
“We need a new constitution to allow each part to grow independently so that we can progress quickly.”
The Most Rev. Matthew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of the Sokoto Diocese, spoke at the event and urged the federal government to steer clear of sentiments as Nigeria moves toward democracy.
According to Bishop Kukah, sustaining democratic principles needed selfless work that shouldn’t be motivated by sentiment in order to promote growth.
The future of constitutional democracy in Nigeria: the need for a new constitutional order was the topic of Kukah’s speech.
The priest claimed that “the majority of leaders have only limited growth in their home town, which does not project democracy.”
“I have to admit that Daura in Kastina has grown over time as a result of being the hometown of the late president Muhammadu Buhari. Even if Daura is a part of Kastina’s territory, it is depressing to learn that the state as a whole is not even close to development. This is not representative of our democracy.
Bishop Kukah added that Nigeria needed to advance politically and democratically because “we cannot continue to run a distorted country and claim that we are in a democracy.”
The Christian human rights activist proposed that every federal institution reflect what Nigeria should reflect everywhere in the nation, stating that the nation should not reinforce inequality.
Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, called on President Bola Tinubu to take the lead in the fight against corruption after denouncing the extent of corruption in Nigeria.
The event’s chairman, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, declared that the majority of those who were in charge of upholding Nigeria’s constitution are actually undermining democracy.
Everyone should be able to enjoy the constitution, and citizens should receive the benefits of democracy. If character, understanding, knowledge, and sacrifice are lacking in leadership and democracy, we are deluding ourselves.
The governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, praised Afe Babalola for giving the country’s hopeless a voice and for what he has done for humanity.
