‘In the AFCON 2022 in Cameroun, we need our finest.’
Mutiu Adepoju, a former Super Eagles midfielder, is concerned about the growing number of Super Eagles players injured just six weeks before the start of the 2022 Africa Nations Cup in Cameroon.
While Nigerians are still mourning the loss of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, goalkeeper Maduka Okoye suffered a shoulder injury during Sparta Rotterdam’s Eredivisie match against champions Ajax on Sunday afternoon.
Okoye was hurt in the 24th minute of the week 14 match after colliding with an opposing player, and was replaced by Sparta’s reserve goalkeeper, Benjamin van Leer.

A protracted injury layoff might put the Super Eagles number one goalie out of the continental championships, with the Cameroun 2022 AFCON only six weeks away.
Though Okoye has dismissed any concerns over how long he would be out of play, claiming that he simply took a knock.
However, Adepoju, who spent the majority of his career in Spain, where he played 175 games and scored 22 goals in seven seasons, told The Guardian in a telephone interview yesterday that Okoye’s injury is cause for alarm.

“As a Nigerian, I am concerned about the new injury to our first-choice goalkeeper, Okoye. We talked about Osimhen first, and now we’re talking about Okoye. The AFCON is approaching quickly, and we need our finest player to shine. “I wish Osimhen and Okoye a speedy recovery,” Adepoju stated.
